? >> reporter: that's right. hi. president obama i'm told by sources here was in the residence tonight watching television reports of the pursuit and that all the developments in watertown as we were, and he saw this go down just as we did. as soon as it was happening, he went over to the oval office to get the latest updates from his staff and then fbi director robert muller called him to officially let him know that the suspect had been captured alive. and he decided to come out and make a statement, i'm told by staff, and they brought in a local news from boston throughout the day so they could monitor actually some of the events all day long. they were revitied to the television just as we were. so the president updated throughout the day, and he is here back at work and ready to come in, brief the nation on a -- an exciting end and a, you know, successful law enforcement conclusion to all of this and the beginning of even more further investigation, piers. we're waiting for him any moment. >> before the president speaks, important to remind everybody again that as they've made this capture
. the man charged with sending ricin tainted letters to president obama and others has been released from federal custody on bond, according to reuters. paul kevin curtis was released today after a hearing was canceled. curtis from mississippi also is accused of sending the deadly toxin to these state offices that were being investigated. the question is, what does this release mean, why did it happen? joe johns is live with us now with the latest. joe, how do we make sense of this? >> i tell you what, it is quite hard to make sense of it right now, chris. as you said, paul kevin curtis, charged with sending ricin-laced letters to president obama and other officials released suddenly from custody on tuesday. this information comes to us from the united states marshal service in mississippi. the marshal service did not know and could not provide information on the circumstances of the release. only that curtis was no longer in federal custody and this comes just hours after curtis' detention and the preliminary hearing into his case was canceled. this was in the third day of testimony and
this happened. >> reporter: the third person killed was a boston university grad student. president obama arrives here tomorrow morning. these type of pressure cookers bombs are popular with terrorists in pakistan, afghanistan and india and used in the attempted bombing in times square in 2010. susan mcginnis, back to you. >> we know it's going to take a long time to go through all the video and those thousands of photos that people sent in. the fbi says of course someone knows who did this. are they any closer to finding a suspect? >> reporter: as far as suspects, there was a saudi man who was being looked as a -- as -- as recently as yesterday and there was a search warrant that brought things out of his apartment, several bags taken out. he has since been cleared. they say he has been fully cooperative. he was simply there as a spectator to see the at the end of the race. he is not a suspect and never was. he was simply a witness to the crime. >> how about the mood in boston? i know, day one is awfully tough. we have a couple of days now. are things starting to get back to normal a lit

. we are -- >> we're hearing president obama set to visit boston tomorrow just to make everybody understand how big this is to the country. there will be an interfaith service when we gets here. we're tracking this entire story for you live in boston, looking at who was lost, but also the important steps toward finding who did this and why. let's bring in national correspondent susan candiotti joining us here in boston with the latest. susan? >> good morning, chris. because of these photos, we are now getting a close-up look at what a killer or killers used to kill and to maim innocent people. crime scene photos show part of what could be a pressure cooker used in the bombings. others show charred wire, attached to a battery. what appears to be a small circuit board. a half-inch nail. and a blood-stained zipper pull tab. another shows what looks like a massive ball bearing bb intended as deadly shrapnel. investigators are also combing through hundreds of photos from the scene, including this one, where a light-colored bag sits next to a mailbox. the before and after images captur
or group that claimed responsibility. >> reporter: day four, president obama comes to boston and speaks at an interfaith service telling boston the country stands with it. >> the world will return to this great american city to run harder than ever and to cheer even louder for the 118th boston marathon. bet on it. >> reporter: later that day, a break in the case. the fbi releases photos and surveillance videos of these two men walking with backpacks. at 10:48 p.m., gunshots are heard on the campus of m.i.t. in massachusetts. reports say that officer sean collier was killed. after that a black mercedes was stolen leading police on a chase. throwing grenades and pipe bombs out of the windows. one suspect, tamerlan tsarnaev was killed. day five, witnesses describe the mayhem. >> we saw the explosion. we must have heard about 60 gunshots. >> reporter: 2:40 a.m. a robo call sent to watertown incidents. >> there is an active incident in watertown right now. all watertown residents should remain in their homes. >> reporter: 4:22 a.m. a suspect on the run. >> we believe this to be a terrorist.
. they're going by president obama's play book. when the sequester cuts came in he said the sky will fall. the effects will be absolutely terrible. now the left is trying to back him up. >>gretchen: except it was his idea originally and many people believe he did have the authority if he wanted to to alter some of those cuts and put them in different areas. >>steve: two pennies on the dollar. if they put public safety, you know, at bay for two pennies on the dollar, that is terrible. >> are you trying to tell me we cut two cents on the dollar? actually it's $45 billion worth of cuts this calendar year. that's it. that's very little. are you trying to tell me that those kind of cuts impede our capability to gather intelligence before the boston event, that they affect the jobs markets, affects the overall economy in the last month? look, i'm sorry, i just don't buy it. i think it's reprehensible to politicize an event like this. >>gretchen: would be like on the other side if republicans said this maybe had happened because of president obama's foreign policy with regard to terrorism. that
if they provide mental health records. the amendment codifies one of president obama's executive orders that requires the attorney general to issue guidance to federal agencies about which records they must submit to nics. it improves nics as well by clarifying the definition of -- quote, unquote -- "adjudicated mental incompetent" so that it includes only actual adjudications, not a single psychiatrist's diagnose -- diagnosis. the manchin-toomey amendment does not do that. mental health records would also be improved by requiring the federal courts to make available to nics information concerning such situations as defendants who plead guilty to a crime for the reason of insanity. this approach is consistent with what "the washington post" columnist cortland molloy writes this very day. he says -- quote -- "the national gun control legislation set for debate in congress would rely on a bureaucratic dragnet of background checks so extensive that anybody's hands could end up being the wrong ones, including mine." he thinks that gun control supporters are -- quote -- "bent on harassing hi
's what we all want to moment dan was a u.s. secret service agent who walked ahead of president obama during "the nine" inaugural parade and he knows what it takes to secure this type of situation. dan, that's what people want to know. how? how could this happen? >> good question. i think everybody is assuming, though, that these bombs were planted yesterday when they, in fact exploded and the event happened. that may not be the case. i don't know that for a fact, but what concerned the secret service and me specifically when i was there and we would organize the parade route for the president was not a device trying to come in that day. we knew we would be able to intercept it, but a device that was preplanted. and that, unfortunately, may be an avenue they may have to pursue investigatively. >> brian: from what you can tell, from what we know, this saudi national is a person of interest in the hospital right now who we've gone through his apartment. how unusual is it for the bomber, who is not a homicide bomber, to be a victim? evidently he had burns on him and smelled like gun powd
be a top priority for the obama administration. the issue of national security has been a top priority for at least 70 percent of americans since the poll has been taken which started in 2002. >> the i.r.s. says boston area taxpayers will get an extension on filing their federal tax returns. taxes were due today in massachusetts because yesterday was a state holiday for them. >> google is praised for its action in the minutes after the bombings, the internet giant created a link called "person finder" where you enter names and contact information about runners and people along the racecourse for the public to view so you can get information and give information. the service came in handy because cell phone service because nonexistent for several hours after the explosion. >> you can show your support for the people of boston through a badge posting on your facebook that reads "our hearts go to everyone in boston and each person with loved ones running in the marathon." >> breaking news from the south bay where a house fire turned deadly. a young victim is a 15-year-old girl trapped in
the bombs exploded seconds apart. president obama calling it an act of terror but saying no group foreign or domestic claimed responsibility for the attack. at this point, joining me now is jeffrey deedee, a security consultant, trained with boston police s.w.a.t. team. thank you for being with us. what we know now about the bomb, apparently in a pressure cooker device, both devices hidden in a backpack, low to the ground, perhaps placed on the street. what do you make of what you're hearing about the devices? >> well, i'm alarmed by what i'm hearing about the devices, because i stand -- i got back last year after nine months in afghanistan, and these pressure cookers are a tactic, technique that is used by the taliban and by al qaeda in afghanistan. very effective weapons, they try to pick the pressure cookers up wherever they can, and they use them to make their ieds. and quite concerned that this is a ttt as they call it in the military that -- >> ttp. >> tactic, technique and -- but the ttp -- procedures -- things of the taliban that we're now seeing here. that doesn't mean it was the
surgery at four boston hospitals. meanwhile, president obama has left no question that the boston marathon bombing was an act of terrorism. the fbi is it evidence response team processing a scene along with the alcohol, tobacco, firearms, and state and local agencies looking for evidence and coming through the debris for any clues that might lead to the capture of those responsible for the carnage. >> this morning the fbi along with boston pd, massachusetts state police, and atf, officially began its forensic evans recovery effort at the site. their goal was to recover physical items related to the blast. those items have been recovered and are being sent to the fbi's laboratory in quantico, virginia lou: the fbi has confirmed there are no plans a responsibility and that the range of suspects and motives remains wide open. authorities are asking anyone with photographs or video near the scene of the explosions to take that evidence to the fbi for examination. the critically important part in the investigation focuses on the components used to make the two bombs and the device or devices us
